will weighted gloves help with guitar practice?
you know how in karate they use weights to practice, so that when youre in a real fight, you are faster? i was wondering if that would work well for guitar playing
if so, where can i find some?
My immediate reaction was that this is a very bad idea. I haven’t heard this ever mentioned before in the years of guitar magazine subscriptions or a decade of research into gear, tone, recording techniques, etc.
My personal opinion at this point is that finger weights will have some benefit to someone people in terms of developing finger strength… however, as quite a few people say in the links below, the most important thing they do is seem to encourage you to pay more attention to your technique, and I think that’s the whole point. If you play cleaner and with better technique, you will improve your speed and playing over time… however, many players don’t have the patience or focus to actually concentrate on their technique. For those players, I can see some benefit.
However, there is a medical reason not to… when I was younger I was very much into weight-lifting and that kind of thing, and devoured any and all information I could find (quite difficult, when so much of it is Weight Lifting supplement junk science and snake oil!), and one thing that I did run into was putting weights on your ankles to help you run.
I did actually do this, and it did help with my conditioning (endurance) and speed… but the very strong admonition was to be very moderate and be very conservative with the amount of weight you add, as it can place a greater burden on your knees and joints – you can’t run/wrestle/do sports/bicycle/win triathalons/etc with a blown knee or ligament!
So while I think there can be an advantage to using fingerweights for some, I feel strongly that for others it would be a very, very bad idea, especially if too much weight is added. I’ve heard over and over that the best way to approaching playing is to play with as little tension as possible in your whole arm, both arms really… that means no stress or tension in your fingers, wrists, arms, elbows, etc. It seems to me that adding weights to your fingers introduces a degree of tension, and that could mean an injury if you don’t do it safely.
I know that I *have* injured my hand/wrist when I used one of those hand/grip strengtheners (gripmaster? something like that)… but I was also playing 4-5 hrs/day, working a manual labor job, and not getting enough sleep either.
So…. I think its better to practice better technique, unless you have a medical reason to use finger weights. If you do decide to use them, use the least weight you can in the beginning, and only progress to higher weights if you absolutely feel the need to. If you feel any pain at any point stop immediately, play as little as possible until your hand has a chance to heal, and either reduce the weights or eliminate them altogether.
Its not *strength* that makes the difference in guitar playing, its dexterity – weights primarily primarily build strength, any increase in agility is almost incidental.
