Nurses and Nursing students: What are the top RN-BSN programs in the country?
I already know about Duke, Villanova, Yale, John Hopkins, and Oregon Health Sciences University, but are there any more?
There are many excellent nursing programs in the US as you have mentioned. Most of the comparisons of nursing programs – when they are discussed as being the top nursing programs in the country – they are comparing the nursing graduate school programs. As far as the BSN degree most schools provide a reasonably equivalent education. It is certainly not a significant enough difference to move across the country at the BSN level. However, as far as nursing programs in any given state it is usually a good idea to check with the state board to find the reported success rates on the NCLEX-RN examination.
If you are considering getting a masters or especially a doctoral degree, the quality of the nursing program can make a difference. However, in most cases, when looking for a graduate program, you look for the nursing graduate school which has the highest rating in the specific specialty in which you are interested. For example, if you were interested in Nurse Anesthesia you might look at joining the Army as the US Army Nurse Anesthesia program has, most consistently, been rated in the top 3 programs in the US. Overall, the one school considered to have the best overall nursing programs is the University of California-San Francisco. Though each of the schools you mentioned is excellent in their own right.
