How do u copy a vhs tape onto a dvd disk from your computer?

I have several home movies on vhs tapes that I would like to put onto DVD disks. Rather than spending $20 for each tape I was wondering how can I do it myself with my computer? I have a DVD burner on my computer but I have Never Used it. Can you please tell me what program I would need to buy and what kind of adapter I would need for my VCR. Thanks.
