How does a polar and non-polar liquid affect chromatography?
For our assignment we used ethanol to find the different types of pen ink. How does polar and non-polar liquids fit in to this?

solubility of the the pigments in the pen is dependent on the polarity of the solvent being used. the more polar a pigment the more polar the solvent needs to be. in contrast the more non polar the pigment the more non polar the solvent should be. you also cant dissolve a non polar pigment in a polar solvent and vis versa. the more dissolved the pigments are the further up the paper they travel.
