Mma Short

I have incredibly short reach, do I have a future in mma?
I’ll skip the “I have a friend who…” bulls**t and just ask straight up. I’ve been considering taking up mma classes, but I feel like my reach might be too short to compete. I have a 64 inch wingspan from finger tip to finger tip. I’m 5′5 and have a large/thick build so I can only hope to ever fight at 155 and not lower. What do you guys think?
Ghost, Danny, n Adam: Thanx a lot guys, a good to know I got a shot. I have Manvel the Anvel aspirations!
P.s. I’m not even gonna try to choose the “best answer” as you were all awesome. Ill let it go to a vote instead. Thanx again
While I can’t predict if you have a future in mma, I definitely think you should take up mma classes. I am a short guy myself, about 5′8 and short stocky build with short arms (I don’t know my exact wingspan) so I know what its like to spar with someone with a long reach. Here’s why you should still look into mma classes if you are interested:
Successful fighters play to their strengths. Short guy with a large thick build? You sound like a wrestler. A strong guy with powerful legs and a low center of gravity is perfect for wrestling and take downs. Having long limbs in mma is a trade off because while you have good reach, you generally aren’t as powerful or stout as shorter guys (if you were a giant ball of muscle and you were tall you would weigh a ton) and it means you are more liable for submissions because you have long limbs to grab on too.
A guy with your body type means of course that you have shorter limbs. It’s harder to submit someone when you have shorter limbs but it’s also harder to be submitted. If you train right you will also most likely be stronger than your same weight competition and you will be harder to take down.
See what I mean? Don’t look at your reach as a genetic disability, look at it in terms of what you will be good at. The ufc like’s to call it a reach “advantage” because it is just another measurable stat that they can talk about. Reach hardly determines a fight, but the fighter’s actual ability does. As you start training you’ll find things that you are naturally suited to and like because your body type makes you naturally better at them than other people. Fighters with different body types are just different, not one type more prevailingly successful than others.
Yup you’ll have to learn how to duck punches just like I did when I first started training in mma. Reach ‘advantage’ only exists in the stand up game, and pretty specific to punches when you guys are at arms length away. Close the distance, fight in the clinch or take them down, either way you take away their advantage.
Remember, plenty of successful fighters have your same build. It’s the heart of the fighter that determines the outcome.
