Mini-cycle in an aquarium? Help needed!?
I previously had a 30 gallon tank running. I had to get rid of one of them very quickly unfortunately due to personal reasons. I bought a smaller 15 gallon tank and moved some of my fish from the 30 gallon to the 15 gallon. The fish i moved were 2 dwarf gourami, 4 neon tetras, 5 corydoras and 5 guppies. (i really wanted to keep these fish). I know that the new tank needed to be cycled so i added as much of the biowheels (with the good bacteria) from my established filter to the new filter as i could. I also added some filter squeezings to the new tank as well. I just checked the ammonia reading and after a couple of days it is at 0.35. Does this mean the filter is processing ammonia as i thought it would have been higher than this after a couple of days. Also, how long do you think it will take for the new filter to completely cycle? (i can continue to add filter squeezings if it will help speed it up). thanks
I have a feeling that your tank will complete cycle within a matter of days. Sounds like you did your home work and transferred significant amount of bacteria already. Bacteria population doubles roughly every 24 hours. How does your nitrite and nitrate read? If you see nitrate readings, then you are pretty close to the end. Can you add that old sponge media instead of just squeezing? I’m sure that will further help the situation. If it doesn’t physically fit, then you can wrap it around the intake of your filter – that will allow some water to flow through the old media.
