What helps a plant produce more oxygen under a blue light then regular light and why?
I did an experiment in my class where we put to cups of radish seeds under a regular light for five minutes and then switched the light to a blue light and the experiment shows that the plant produces more oxygen under a blue light but I am having troubles finding research to put in my analysis to help prove this….etc…
Ok, so the amount of oxygen that is produced by the plant is a measurement of the rate of metabolism of the plant. Specifically, the rate at which photosynthesis is taking place. So what you are seeing experimentally is that under blue light, photosynthesis takes place faster relative to White Light. Why?
This is where you need to do a little research into the wavelengths of light. You can check out the first link below for more information but the key information is this.
White light is a mixture of various wavelengths of light.
With blue light, all your light is around 475 nm in wavelength.
Now chlorophyll selectively absorbs light at certain wavelengths and reflects others. If you check out the second link below you can see that one of the peak absorbtion wavelengths for chlorophyll is right around 475 nm. So that means that if you put the plant under white light, much of the light is being reflected and not used for photosynthesis, whereas, if you put it under a blue light, most of the light is being absorbed and utilized for photosynthesis.
