Pull-ups or Chin-ups? Find out the difference

A lot of people don’t know that the pull-up and chin-up are two different exercises.  They’re very similar, but they do offer different ranges of motion and stress the involved muscles differently.  The main difference between the two is the grip width and the grip type – the chin up uses a pronated grip and is usually more narrow, whereas the pull up uses a supinated grip and is usually more wide.

The main advantage of doing the pull-up is that it’ll better isolate your lats.  Other than that, it’s pretty similar to the chin-up.  With the pull-up, you’ll get a smaller range of motion, but the exercise is also more difficult since you’re using fewer muscles to pull yourself up.  Also, you’ll want to consider that the pull-up will work different muscles in your forearms.  It’ll put a good amount of stress on the brachioradialis, whereas the chin-up does not.  Another advantage of the pull-up is that you can modify it into the power straight.  This is a Great Power Training Exercise that’ll stress your entire body, including your core.

The chin-up uses a pronated grip and is useful for building up both your lats and your biceps.  The chin-up, surprisingly, is also better for the trapezius muscles.  This exercise is superior to the pull-up in that it allows you a longer range of motion.  This means your muscles are stressed over a larger angle, stimulating additional growth in areas that would otherwise be untouched.  I recommend the chin-up for anyone that’s looking to gain mass in their arms as well as their lats because this is the best way to do it.

There are several other types of grip variations that you can use on a pull up bar.  A lot of people like to take what I call a mid grip, which is essentially both of your palms facing in toward you.  This is a good grip that’ll allow you to place additional stress on your shoulders and on your brachialis, a strong muscle under your bicep.

As this is the 7th release in the Hotel Costes series, you might think you know what to expect from DJ Stephane Pompougnac’s turntables. But 2003’s Hotel Costes 6 provided a dose of the dark and unexpected, a trend which happily continues on Costes 7. The usual oh-so-classy, jazz-tinged dance fare, driven into the ground by a thousand downtempo DJs, hasn’t been totally expunged. But grittier track…
